There are endless open source software applications available to both the amateur and professional “programmer” that can be used to build a website. One may use these, and instantly declare that they are in the computer programming business. Quite frankly, if you are not actually in the computer programming world, you may not be able to tell much of a difference on the surface. Truth is there is a world of difference between the professional computer programmer and someone using a piece of software to develop. The most important difference is understanding the clients programming needs.
Professional computer programming involves hand writing computer code in order to create a piece of functional software. The function is determined by whoever will be using the software application in order to perform a task or goal. I.E. build a website, manage a database, create a desktop sales application, develop a mobile application etc…
